Anaerobic oxidation of methane does not attenuate methane emissions from thermokarst lakes

چکیده
The ongoing global temperature rise enhances permafrost thaw in the Arctic, allowing Pleistocene-aged frozen soil organic matter to become available for microbial degradation and production of greenhouse gases, particularly methane. Here, we examined extent mechanism anaerobic oxidation methane (AOM) sediments four interior Alaska thermokarst lakes, which formed continue expand as a result ice-rich thaw. In cores surface (~ 1 m) lake quantified (methanogenesis) AOM rates using incubation experiments low (4°C) high (16°C) temperatures. Methanogenesis were measured by accumulation over ~ 90 d, whereas adding labeled-13CH4 measuring produced dissolved inorganic 13C. Our results demonstrate that while methanogenesis was vigorous these anoxic sediments, lower two orders magnitude. almost all sediment depths temperatures, remained less than 2% rates. Experimental evidence indicates is strongly related methanogens, addition methanogens' inhibitor prevented AOM. Variety electron acceptor additions did not stimulate AOM, methanotrophs scarcely detected. These observations suggest signals might be enzymatic reversibility (“back-flux”) during CH4 production, rather thermodynamically favorable Regardless mechanism, quantitative show near (< 1-m) have little no buffer mechanisms capable attenuating warming climate.

Light-Dependent Aerobic Methane Oxidation Reduces Methane Emissions from Seasonally Stratified Lakes
Lakes are a natural source of methane to the atmosphere and contribute significantly to total emissions compared to the oceans. Controls on methane emissions from lake surfaces, particularly biotic processes within anoxic hypolimnia, are only partially understood. Here we investigated biological methane oxidation in the water column of the seasonally stratified Lake Rotsee. A zone of methane ox...

Early social exposure is important for developing appropriate, species-specific adult behaviors. Carson Murray et al. (pp. 18189–18194) followed wild chimpanzees, habituated to human observers, in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and analyzed maternal subgrouping patterns to investigate why adult males tend to be more gregarious than adult females. Mothers accompanied by their sons were more greg...
متن کاملAnaerobic methane oxidation in low-organic content methane seep sediments
Sulfate-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is the key sedimentary microbial process limiting methane emissions from marine sediments and methane seeps. In this study, we investigate how the presence of low-organic content sediment influences the capacity and efficiency of AOM at Bullseye vent, a gas hydrate-bearing cold seep offshore of Vancouver Island, Canada. The upper 8 m of sed...
متن کاملEstimating methane emissions from northern lakes using ice- bubble surveys
The magnitude and variability in methane (CH4) emissions from lakes are uncertain due to limitations in methods for quantifying the patchiness of ebullition (bubbling). We present a field method to estimate an important and highly uncertain source: ebullition from northern lakes. We defined four classes of CH4 bubble clusters trapped in lake ice representing distinct types of biogenic ebullitio...
